Taylor (Co-Founder): " I never had the chance to meet Juan Carlos Garcia, who passed right before I started teaching at the Macchi School. Darren, a buddy of mine who spent nine years at the school, would tell me some of his best memories came from playing chess with Mr. Garcia."
"He was near impossible to beat," Darren admits. "It was like he knew how he was going to win the game before he moved his first pond," he remembers.
The Jesuit phrase, "A Man for Others," comes to mind when I think of Juan Carlos and in his life. He had a vision to help those from his country who were capable but handcuffed to poverty because of the country's political instability and lack of infrastructure. He believed in people, most times more than they believed in themselves. His philanthropic efforts include the establishment if the Macchi School, a 7-12 school for gifted students in Paraguay. Five students have graduated from American universities, while the rest have received degrees from universities in Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil.
